Abstract

This is an opinion paper on the need for the creation of an economic city for Kano State. It begins by explaining the concept of economic city before explaining the need for the city, the criterion for choosing its location and the key components to be considered in its plan. The paper also addresses the issues of funding the economic city project, its implementation and the benefits it will bring to the State and the nation in general. The problems of congestion, over stretching of resources and the difficulties to be encountered in the provision of facilities (roads, water, electricity, health care, etc) to different parts of the Kano metropolis are among the factors indicating the need for a second but an economic city in the State. The proposed criteria for choosing the location of the economic city may include the existence of major roads that pass through the city and link it with other cities and towns and the nearness to sources of water and energy, among others. Key Words: Economic City, Creation of an Economic City, Kano State of Nigeria, Components of an Economic City, Benefits of an Economic City
